One arrives at the smart modernist station of 1933 by Henri Pacon, though somewhat modernised since. Opposite is the chic H\u00f4tel Jehan de Beauce (named after the cathedral&rsquo;s architect) of 1930 with ceramic decoration. Via\u00a0\u00a0Rue Fessard to a fine\u00a0<b>monument to Louis Pasteur\u00a0<\/b>of 1903 by Paul Richer, its bronze relief a recast after the original was melted down by the Nazis.\u00a0<b>Boulevard Maurice Violette:\u00a0\u00a0<\/b>the former\u00a0<b>Post Office\u00a0<\/b>(now the M\u00e9diath\u00e8que), an immense building of 1923-28 by Raoul Brandon where his late Art Nouveau architecture combines with its jolly Art D\u00e9co exterior mosaics by Pierre Vaillard on postal themes. The original interiors now lost. Opposite is a\u00a0<b>monument\u00a0<\/b>of 1948 in red granite by Marcel Courbier to heroic Resistance hero Jean Moulin (born 1899, prefet at Chartres when war commenced in 1940, tortured and assassinated by the Gestapo in 1943. Less well known is that he was a talented artist under the pseudonym of Romanin, it not deemed suitable for a state official\u00a0\u00a0to publically be an artist. Entitled\u00a0<i>Glaive Bris\u00e9<\/i>&#8211;<i><\/i>depicting a fist grasping a broken sword.<b><\/b>Nearby is a discreet bronze plaque recording the entrance of Patton&rsquo;s American troops relieving the town in August 1944. De Gaulle also visited the town that month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv1376882504ydpead657b9MsoNormal\"><b><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Rue Collin d&rsquo;Harteville:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span lang=\"EN-GB\">the ancient Eglise Ste Foy with its Romanesque arch.\u00a0<b>No 11:\u00a0<\/b>14c sculpted doorway, possibly the entrance to a Jeu de Paume. Opposite is the 18c\u00a0<b>Pr\u00e9fecture<\/b>with a plaque recording Jean Moulin.\u00a0<b>Place G\u00e9n\u00e9ral de Gaulle: no 15\u00a0<\/b>is a curious neo-Gothic house in polychrome brick.\u00a0<b>Place des Epars:\u00a0<\/b>bronze statue of Fran\u00e7ois Marceau, revolutionary general who died aged 27. Of 1851 by Auguste Pr\u00e9ault.<b><\/b>\u00a0The\u00a0<b>Grand H\u00f4tel Monarque\u00a0<\/b>is an historic inn (its restaurant is One-Star Michelin).\u00a0<b>Rue Noel Ballay:\u00a0<\/b>at no 10 a Renaissance building (ex Maison du M\u00e9decin Huv\u00e9), attributed to Philibert Delorme with much sculpture.\u00a0<b>Place du Cygne no 19:\u00a0<\/b>Maison de la Vo\u00fbte) a former grenier de sel with a 12c crypt.\u00a0<b><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv1376882504ydpead657b9MsoNormal\"><b><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Place Marceau:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span lang=\"EN-GB\">obelisk of 1801 again commemorating Fran\u00e7ois Marceau, the revolutionary\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv1376882504ydpead657b9MsoNormal\"><b><span lang=\"EN-GB\">VISIT the Cathedral.\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span lang=\"EN-GB\">One of the glories of French Gothic architecture, noted for its extensive mediaeval stained glass and sculpture. The fifth to be built in the quite short time from 1194 until 1220. It survived the French Revolution. Of its contrasting spires, the northern one was rebuilt in Flamboyant Gothic in 1506 following destruction by lightning. Notable things to see are the astronomical clock and the labyrinth in which the faithful trace a path. The English guide Malcolm Miller has been on duty since 1958!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv1376882504ydpead657b9MsoNormal\"><b><span lang=\"EN-GB\">VISIT Centre Internationale du Vitrail:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span lang=\"EN-GB\">(10-12.30\/14.30-17.45)<b><\/b>in l&rsquo;Enclos de Loens, a mediaeval former tithe house.<b><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv1376882504ydpead657b9MsoNormal\"><b><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Visit Mus\u00e9e des Beaux Arts: (entrance free)\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span lang=\"EN-GB\">housed the in the fine 17c former Bishop&rsquo;s palace (10-12.30\/14-17h) with much to see including early enamels, mediaeval sculpture, Madame de Pompadour&rsquo;s collection of globes, much modern art and glass. The 17c garden too is notable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv1376882504ydpead657b9MsoNormal\"><b><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Rue du Cheval Blanc no 19:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Le Pichet Trois restaurant with 1900 ceramic decoration. Sculpted by Henri Allouard, int al.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv1376882504ydpead657b9MsoNormal\"><b><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Rue de la Poissonni\u00e8re:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Tourist Office in the half-timbered mediaeval Maison du Saumon. Depictions of the Annunciation and St Michel killing the dragon.\u00a0<b>Rue du Soleil d&rsquo;Or no 4:\u00a0<\/b>the handsome Boucherie Pinson of 1892, now Listed, its interior seems to be unchanged.<b>Place Billard: March\u00e9 aux L\u00e9gumes<\/b>&#8211; the iron-framed market hall of 1898. Via the heart of mediaeval Chartres:\u00a0\u00a0<b>Rue des Changes\u00a0<\/b>and\u00a0<b>Rue des Grenets:\u00a0<\/b>the picturesque 14c Gothic H\u00f4tel de la Caige.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv1376882504ydpead657b9MsoNormal\"><b><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Visit l&rsquo;Eglise St Aignan:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Largely 16c, with Renaissance stained-glass and of the 1880s by Atelier Lorin. Frescoes of 1869 by Emile Boeswillwald, who collaborated with Viollet-le-Duc. If time visit the immense\u00a0<b>St Pierre:\u00a0<\/b>the immense mediaeval former abbey church with notable stained-glass.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv1376882504ydpead657b9MsoNormal\"><b><span lang=\"EN-GB\">H\u00f4tel de Ville\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span lang=\"EN-GB\">in the fine 17c\/18c H\u00f4tel Montescot with handsome sculpted doorways. Adjoining is a Art Nouveau mansion, a rarety in the town. The mairie is now mainly housed in a glass-walled building by Wilmotte.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv1376882504ydpead657b9MsoNormal\"><b><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Boulevard Chasles: Th\u00e9\u00e2tre Municipal:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span lang=\"EN-GB\">of 1859 by Alfred Pi\u00e9bourg.\u00a0<b>Cin\u00e9ma Les Enfants du Paradis:\u00a0<\/b>a striking building of 2007 by star architect Rudy Ricciotti which incorporates an ancient garage as its entrance. He is actually in prison for illegal works to his Listed Premises in Bandol.\u00a0<b><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv1376882504ydpead657b9MsoNormal\"><b><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Take Filibus 4:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span lang=\"EN-GB\">(glimpse en route:\u00a0<b>Place du Lyc\u00e9e:\u00a0<\/b>Monument in bronze of 1904 by Henri Allouard to Noel Ballay, colonial governor of French West Africa).\u00a0\u00a0Alight at Picassiette.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv1376882504ydpead657b9MsoNormal\"><b><span lang=\"EN-GB\">VISIT: La Maison Picassiette,\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span lang=\"EN-GB\">22 Rue du Repos. 10-12.30\/14-17h. This extraordinary creation from 1929 by Raymond Isidore is a wonderfully bizarre place, all derived fom broken ceramics.
